Verifying compliance
We have a contract with each participating café which requires them to make honest declarations to us on whether or not they meet the standards set by the reasonableness tests. We use these declarations to award badges. Cafes who make false declarations may be liable for prosecution under the Fair Trading Act (1986) and will be required to leave the project. From June 2011 we will be running annual audits on participating cafes, and also reserve the right do to spot checks.
Consumers may also wish to ask cafes how they have been awarded their badges. This is a good way to engage with the owners of your favourite cafes and learn more about their business practices. It also helps to encourage cafes to continue to improve their practices, in response to consumer demand for improved environmental and social impacts.
