Composting
How do we award the badge?
To earn this badge, the cafe has to compost their organic waste (this includes providing the leftover edible food to charity or food scraps to farm animals).
Why do we think it's important?
Food is a core part of a cafe's business, so it’s not surprising that around 60 per cent of an average cafe's waste is made up of food scraps. The average cafe sends around 3640 kg of organic waste to landfill each year.
Composting reduces:
- Waste costs
- The amount of waste going to landfill
- The production of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change, which is released when organic waste decomposes in a landfill.
In providing left-over food to charity and scraps to farms, or turing food waste into nutrient-rich soil, cafes are providing a valuable resource for the community.
Coffee grounds also make outstanding compost for your garden. Alternatively, the grounds can just be spread on the top of the soil.
