Conscious Consumers - Eco-packaging

Eco-packaging

eco-packaging

How do we award the badge?

To earn this badge, a cafe must use compostable or recyclable packaging for their takeaway coffee cups, takeaway food containers and takeaway cold drink containers.
Note: There must be collection and processing facilities available for products to qualify as 'eco-packaging' (see supplier criteria for further information). Cafes must also inform customers (by way of signs up in the cafe) how to dispose of the packaging.

Why do we think it's important?

Although it’s best to avoid packaging if possible, compostable packaging is a good alternative to conventional plastic packaging, as it is made from renewable resources and is often produced with less environmental impact.

There are currently two types of compostable products available:

Fibre-based products, made from bamboo, sugar cane waste and reed products. Products include cups, plates, bowls and takeaway containers.

Polylactic acid (PLA) products, made from corn starch or sugar cane. Products include cups for water and other cold liquids, and salad containers.

PLA products require a commercial composting facility to break down properly. PLA products should not be mixed with recyclables as they can contaminate mainstream plastic recycling.
