Conscious Consumers - Free range

Free range

How did we award the badge?

To earn this badge, exclusively free range eggs must be purchased for all of a cafe's menu and counter-food items.

Why do we think it's important?

‘Free range’ means that animals have continuous daytime access to an outdoor area. Non-free range animals often live in cramped and overcrowded conditions.  Non-free range chickens may be kept in cages with two or three other chickens. In New Zealand cages hens only have to be provided with 500 square centimeters of living space - less than the size of an A4 piece of paper.

Free range eggs and meats are considered to be tastier and healthier as they are usually free from the antibiotic residue and antibiotic resistant bacteria found in much non-free range produce. Free range is both better for the animals and better for us.
